Transform Your
design Framework into
a Drupal 7 theme!

It starts. You get this AWSESOME client referral, that is a dream...but they use manages things?

Being the savvy front ender you are you check it out, and try to see if this could work, it is the dream client after all. You want to be able to do this, and you've done WordPress so how bad could it be...

OMFG!!! Runaway!! Runaway!!! How does this even work? What is a theme? Where are the files? Where do I even put anything??

But wait! You have your fave framework, you did all your portfolio work in it, and could code it in your sleep. We'll just use that!

All you have to do is hook it up into a theme...and how do you even do that? There are these weird files ending tpl...? And then on top of that, your CSS is no where close to showing up in the browser.

But maybe I could just use a theme from the Drupal themes page right? IT will solve all my problems. It's already done by people more qualified than myself, solving my same...well almost my same problems...wait where is the documentation for this???

You've been using Foundation 5 for a year now but the theme is regretfully not updated yet, maybe you can abandon that extra feature...

Nope there it is right smack dab in the middle of the dream client's list of requests. Gah!! What are you going to do?

You can't just walk away from this one! Maybe I can just custom theme the whole thing? Right? It won't be THAT hard!!

I'll just custom theme the forms, and do everything by hand and then I won't have to hook up a framework and everything will be GREAT!

You. Do. Not. Want. To theme every Drupal form. BY. HAND!

Trust me 3hrs a piece minimum, and most clients barely want a redesign much less pay for the 3hrs a piece on form theming alone.

So what are you to do?

Just make your fave Framework into a custom theme!

But say...that will take days to learn how to pull it all together, time I don't have!!

AND I'm not a developer, I don't know how to do all that developy PHP shit that everyone always waxes on and on about.

First of all PHP is a great tool, but is kind of like the skinny kid on the dodge ball team, scrappy and good at what it does but not the most obvious choice by the popular kids.

So PHP developers can get a A LOT defensive and feel the need to tell you EVERYTHING.

Which is overwhelming, and not very helpful for you the front ender who works with six different tools a day anyway.

But where PHP developers are right is that just blindly coding your own theme is a good way to fall down a hole that you can't crawl out of.

Use my handy dandy guide to make your own custom theme from your framework. It's nice and succint, and comes with the awesome benefit that if you signup now you get to give me feedback.

But Sarah you say, I don't have the time to learn all that stuff.

BUT YOU DO, it's time you would spend reading documentation and theming forms anyway.

AND if you get your framework working well you can use the custom workflows your brain is already used to, so IT WILL SAVE YOU TIME AND SLEEP!

You just need to know how.

Without having to waste hours you could spend on design.

(Here is a taste of the awesomeness that will save you headaches.)
